Good Times in Novice Gardening #5

Here is the latest... My veggies are growing! I have blossoms for squashes and tomatoes, peppers and strawberries. My lettuces are really doing well - the photo at the bottom shows the first "pickens". We had a deelish fresh salad for Sunday dinner last week for the first time consisting of various lettuces, some parsley and my FAVORITE - cilantro! Tasty!

Some of my seeds have not come up however - no carrot tops, etc. Not sure what I did wrong there... I will have to investigate. And, I have ANTS galore. I need to get rid of them - ideas? I am trying to be "organic" so I don't want to spray them. I haven't noticed any other pesky critters or pests as of yet.
Come on over and I'll fix ya a salad!

  1. Looks great Deon! I haven't had ants (yet), but my friend does and with some research, she was going to try sprinkling cornmeal because I guess the ants eat it but can't digest it, so they die. Sounds easy enough, but honestly I have no idea if it works. Good luck! Oh, and I will take a salad please.

  2. Wow! I"m impressed! Very beautiful. So about strawberries, mine have started to turn red, but now they are starting to shrivel and I think the birds are eating them. What to do?

  3. Can I come over and eat a fresh salad with you? That looks great. Your garden is much more advanced than ours.

  5. Bravo! I had trouble with my seeds too. I just replanted my carrots, onions, turnips, radishes, and beets. I have noticed ants in my bed that I had to replant. I am wondering if the ants ate my seeds? If you come up with a solution, let me know. I made pesto with basil from my garden last week. It's such a great feeling to eat what you have planted.
